Gardening With Eggshells
Plant fertilized with eggshell water
Don't Throw Out Those Eggshells!
The incredible edible egg has so many benefits and a few are over looked when it comes to recycling the goodness of the eggshells. Next time you crack eggs try and save the eggshell in two half pieces. An empty egg carton would come in very handy for this step! Take each eggshell and fill with a little potting soil and place a seed in each half. Lightly water each seedling and place gently into the egg carton. The seedlings will use the eggshell as a planter with rich nutrients. When the seedlings are ready to be transplanted to a larger planter or outside in your garden you lightly crush the eggshell with the seedling inside being careful not to damage the plant and place in the newly prepared soil or container and watch it grow.
Make your own eggshell fertilizer!
One of the easiest fertilizers to make is a simple eggshell water fertilizer. You take a gallon ziplock bag and place any used eggshells throughout the week into the bag and store it in the refrigerator. After you have about two dozen eggshells in the ziplock bag then crush the eggshells in the bag and place them in an empty rinsed out gallon milk jug. Add water and let it sit in a cool preferably dark place for about a week. Use this fertilizer to water your vegetables. You can use it to water houseplants but I would recommend sitting it outside first and letting the egg smell escape first unless you like the smell of fermenting eggs.
Eat, use and replenish
Once you have used all the fertilizer in your water jug you have two options. You can discard the eggshells and start a new fertilizer gallon jug or you can simply add water again to the shells that are still in the jug. You can even add more eggshells to the original jug. Remember all it takes is used eggshells and simple water from your tap or better yet pure or distilled water.
